The old, trussed roof was decayed beyond retention except one truss that was retained and expressed as a non-structural feature internally. The new replacement roof was designed in a contemporary style with new sustainably sourced timber and metal tied trusses. The arrangement of the trusses was set at alternating diagonals to each other to provide an aesthetically unique strong feature down the whole length of the open plan first floor space. This creates a striking interplay with the natural light to the studio that is provided via an extremely large one-piece frameless glass to glass rooflight, set straddling and hovering over the apexes of the trusses. The trusses set on the diagonal also created additional structural stability to resist racking of the roof that had occurred with the previous failing trusses. All other new walls, stairs, and design features within, mirrored the angles of the trusses. The design also incorporated inset solar PV panels to the roof with large battery facility and air source heat pump so that heat, light, and hot water provision is completely carbon neutral.
